6 Trends from Homearama 2024

As autumn approaches, Homearama 2024 offers a glimpse into the evolving landscape of home design, showcasing the latest trends from custom builders.

Here’s a rundown of the six major trends that stood out this year and what you can expect moving forward.

Trend 1: Wallpaper Makes a Bold Comeback

Wallpaper, once relegated to the background of home decor, has made a striking return. This year at Homearama, it was hard to miss its vibrant presence. Almost every house featured wallpaper in one or two rooms, with a wide array of colors and textures. The standout was a walk-in pantry adorned with a colorful floral wallpaper, including a cover plate also decorated in the same design. It’s been over two decades since I’ve seen a cover plate covered in wallpaper, making this revival particularly noteworthy. Wallpaper has evolved significantly since the 80s and is set to become a major trend in the coming years.

Trend 2: The Rise of Home Offices

Home offices have become a staple in new construction, largely driven by the increase in remote work. These spaces are no longer just makeshift corners; they are becoming more dedicated and spacious. The duality of working from home—offering both the challenge of distractions and the convenience of avoiding commute—has made the home office a key feature in modern homes. Expect to see more thoughtfully designed home office spaces in future builds.

Trend 3: Expansive Open Areas

The trend towards open spaces continues to gain momentum. Gone are the days of cramped laundry rooms and tiny pantries. This year, larger, more open areas are making a statement. Pantries are evolving into multifunctional spaces, resembling butler’s pantries or prep kitchens. This shift towards expansive, open areas is a response to homeowners’ desire for more functional and inviting spaces.

Trend 4: Functional Basement Spaces

Basements are being transformed into versatile spaces tailored for various activities. Whether it’s a hobby room, meditation space, or entertainment area, basements are no longer just for storage. The trend of creating functional, dedicated spaces within basements reflects a growing interest in personalized, adaptable home
environments.

Trend 5: The Ranch Revival

A surprising trend at this year’s Homearama was the prevalence of ranch-style homes. Out of the six houses I visited, four were ranches. Despite the larger sizes, these ranch-style homes offer a sense of spaciousness while accommodating a desire for easier accessibility. This focus on ranch homes suggests a shift towards practicality and comfort in housing choices. to bring in not one, but two new kitchens to continue to expand and cater to every culinary taste.

Trend 6: A Shift in Color Trends

The dominance of gray is fading, giving way to natural tones like alabaster and soft beiges. Additionally, bold color choices are making a comeback, especially on ceilings and accent walls. The resurgence of accent walls and colorful ceilings, such as a pink/peach hue, indicates a move towards more personalized and vibrant interiors. This shift suggests homeowners are seeking more dynamic and energetic spaces, moving away from the monotony of neutral palettes.

While design trends are ever-changing, the core styles—farmhouse, modern, masculine, and natural—remain adaptable to individual tastes. Homearama 2024 highlights how trends evolve while maintaining a foundation of classic design principles. These insights offer a glimpse into what’s next in home design, providing inspiration for those looking to refresh or remodel their living spaces.
